Coffee at Merce and the Muse

Hand dripped coffee at Merce and the Muse

Description of Your Photo (Please use full sentences)

A cup of black coffee - the essence of Parisian cafe culture.

Or is it?

Describe Your Technique

I took this photo just after the New York style cafe, Merce and the Muse opened, and in actual fact, this is a far cry from the cliche of an espresso at the zinc of an old Paris cafe. This is a hand dripped cup of Danish coffee brewed by US expat Merce herself - the proprietor of this Greenwhich village-style import in in the Northern Marais.

Because Paris is an international, evolving, cosmopolitan hub and not just a fixed tradition...but that said, tradition and modernity meet in the middle, and you get great coffee in a great cafe and THAT is a Parisian institution in itself.

Tips and Tricks

  • wide aperture for a shallow depth of field, focusing the eye on the detail of the foreground - in this case the coffee cup.
