Description of Your Photo (Please use full sentences)

There is something innately beautiful about Paris, about the people, about the architecture, about the way of life. Maybe it's just because when in Paris, you tend to see "la vie en rose" or maybe Paris really is just that wondrous with macarons and baguettes on every corner!

I love to photograph Paris and each time I go, I fill up my hard drive with the hundreds of images that I capture each day. I take immense joy and endless satisfaction from my pictures taken in the City of Lights, the place I consider my second home, and I hope you enjoy two of my favorites.

When Was the Photo Taken?

Photo 1:

One unusually warm afternoon, after class at Le Cordon Bleu, I decided to go and get a blood orange sorbet at Berthillon's on the Île Saint-Louis (which was delicious). I walked along the banks, basking in the sun, and when I looked down I saw these two and my curiosity was piqued. Were they friends, or lovers? It was none of my business nor did it matter, but being a passionate people watcher, I couldn't help but take this photo. [This photo was taken in the early evening of February 28, 2009.]

Photo 2:

This woman kneeling on the dirty ground, surrounded by cigarette stubs and McDonald's garbage, was so sad looking and helpless as the world passed her by on the richest street in Paris, Les Champs-Elysées. [This photo was taken on the evening of June 11, 2007.]

Tips and Tricks

  • Always have your camera ready. You never know what you might come across.
  • Photos are your best souvenirs, so take pictures of everything you see. No how many photos of the Eiffel Tower, you've seen, none are so special as your own.
  • Take your pictures from an unusual angle. This gives a new look to a potentially trite subject.
  • Take pictures of people. You'll spend hours laughing, smiling, and remembering your stay looking back at all the strangers.
  • Don't be afraid to take pictures. That is so important, the most important thing.

Optional: What Inspired You?

I am inspired by almost everything I see, whether it be lovers along the Seine or a beggar on a boulevard. Anything that evokes emotion inspires me. I love taking pictures of the elegant and the beautiful, but oftentimes a subtle portrait of a stranger captures the true essence of wherever you are.

Optional: What Camera and Settings Did You Use?

For Photo 1, I used a Canon PowerShot SD1100.

For Photo 2, I used a Canon PowerShot SD1000.
