We normally use a weeklong (regular) metro pass on trips to Paris as it is by far the best deal for a 5-7 day trip, but only if you arrive on a Monday or Tuesday. The Visite pass starts any day of the week at the first time you use it. It is easy to buy at any Metro station, either with a ticket window or an automated machine at non-ticket window stations. The information attendant will usually help you at those stations is you start off with a "Bonjour, sil vous plait" no matter how bad your French is. The Visite also carries some discounts on attractions and stores. Overall, only use the 5 day version. Stick to carnets (pack of ten tickets) or the weekly pass if your trip starts on the right day.
