Holiday Festivities Begin in Paris
It may be unseasonably warm around Paris, but that hasn't stopped city officials from getting the holiday season started. Mayor Bertrand Delanoe and Oscar-winning actress Marion Cotillard flipped the switches Thursday to embalm famous avenue the Champs-Elysées in holiday lights-- deep blue to symbolize France's presidency of the European Union. Other locations around Paris will soon follow. Like last year, the city has opted for energy-saving lights. The Champs-Elysées is also hosting a full-fledged Christmas market for the first time.
