Paris Riverboat Sinks
In an extremely rare accident Saturday, two people died after a sightseeing boat carrying 12 people sank on the Seine river. A man in his forties and a 6-year old boy passed away Sunday morning after being rushed to the hospital with serious injuries, while all ten other passengers were rescued immediately from the water, having jumped overboard as the boat sank. The police are still trying to determine whether the accident, which occured near Notre Dame Cathedral, was caused by the boat colliding into a bridge near the cathedral or into a moored cruise boat. Authorities have not disclosed the name of the tour operator.
The question that some may ask after an accident like this occurs is, "Is it safe to take a boat tour in Paris?" The answer is an unequivocal yes. Dozens of sightseeing boats traverse the Seine every day without incident.
