Visitors Commemorate Princess Diana in Paris
Tourists gathered Friday in Paris to commemorate the ten-year anniversary of Princess Diana's fatal car accident in the Pont de l'Alma tunnel, some placing flowers and cards around the golden statue of the eternal flame near the tunnel-- in reality a tribute to Franco-American friendship, but adopted as the unofficial shrine to Diana following her death. There have been calls for the creation of an official memorial in Paris, but nothing is in the works as of yet.
According to a BBC report, Friday's gathering was relatively small, not attracting the large crowds some anticipated.
Ten years on, many remain dissatisfied with conclusions French police drew about the circumstances of the crash that killed Diana, her companion Dodi El Fayed, and bodyguard Trevor Rees-Jones, who were hurtling through the Paris tunnel while being followed by paparazzi. Conspiracy theories abound, propagated in part by websites and forums dedicated to the question. Here in France, though, the general public seems much less riveted by these theories.
