Niches for Nightowls

Saturday December 16, 2006
Most people imagine Paris nightlife as a flurry of can-can feathers and throaty cabaret songs, a la Moulin Rouge or Edith Piaf. Rest assured, you can still find these nostalgic kinds of spots and shows in the City of Light. But nightowls looking for a more contemporary way to get down will not be disappointed: countless bars, clubs, and venues await the sleep-shy among you. To get started, check out these cream-of-the-crop spots:
  • The Hotel Costes Bar and Lounge is a stomping ground for fashionistas or fashion victims. Consider coming here for an after-dinner drink. World-class lounge music and people-watching opportunities abound.
  • Divan du Monde: This nightclub and venue features gorgeous neo-goth decor and DJs spinning everything from hip-hop to new wave and fusion electro. This was also once the haunt of 19th century bohemian stars like Charles Baudelaire.
  • The WAGG bar and nightclub is a classic spot on the Paris night scene-- the 27-year old Jim Morrison was rumored to have spent his last night here back when the club was called the Rock n' Roll Circus. The WAGG is the brainchild of fashion designer Terence Conran and features sleek modern decor. It's also an ideal spot for those who prefer dancing to classic funk, disco, pop, or soul hits rather than to avant-garde grooves.
  • Finally, check out the Time Out Paris Clubs and Gigs page for more ideas on where to head after dark.
